Cash on delivery in UAE e-commerce: how to cut failed deliveries
Cash on delivery brings in orders, and some of them never get paid for. Eight ways to reduce the losses.
- Confirm every COD order before dispatch, ideally by WhatsApp.
- Set expectations on delivery time; the longer the wait, the more refusals.
- Use small incentives to move repeat customers to prepaid.
- Track refusal rates by product, area and source.
For many Gulf online stores, cash on delivery (COD) is both a growth tool and a cost. It lowers the barrier for first-time buyers, but refused or failed deliveries mean paying for shipping both ways and stock sitting in transit.
Eight ways to reduce failed COD orders
- Confirm before dispatch. A quick WhatsApp or call to confirm the order, address and time catches impulse orders and wrong numbers.
- Ship fast. The longer the wait, the more likely the buyer changes their mind or buys elsewhere.
- Send tracking updates. Messages on dispatch and the morning of delivery keep the order on the buyer's mind.
- Get the address right. Ask for a map pin or landmark. Many failed deliveries are simply couriers unable to find the customer.
- Consider a COD fee. A small fee, clearly shown, can nudge buyers towards prepaid without stopping them.
- Reward prepaid. A small discount or free gift for card payment moves loyal customers away from COD.
- Limit COD where needed. For high-value items, ask for a deposit or prepaid only.
- Track and learn. Measure refusals by product, area, ad campaign and customer. Some ad audiences produce far more refused orders than others.

It filters out wrong numbers, duplicate and impulse orders before you pay for shipping.
Is a COD fee legal?
Stores commonly charge one when it is clearly shown before checkout. Check consumer rules for your situation.
